About English 8
Details about this class can be found in the class disclosure statement. Some important items to remember:
Students will focus on improving their reading, writing, language, presenting, and critical thinking skills in accordance with the DESK standards as outlined by Davis School District.
- Students will be able to identify key ideas and details in literature read.
- Students will be able to identify the craft and structure of readings.
- Students will be able to integrate ideas and knowledge between texts and from personal experience into texts read.
- Students will be able to communicate effectively through argumentative and informational writing.
- Students will be able to demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
Expectations
Students are expected to learn and refine the skills necessary to find success in all forms of communication: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The skills learned in 8th grade will help with success in 9th grade and beyond
Always bring to class the following things:
- school issued device
- pen or pencil
- class folder

Grading Scheme
All assignments and assessments will be graded on a "Standards Based" grading model. The largest portion of the grade will be based on assessments and quizzes given on the necessary skills taught during class. Scores will be out of 10 points for practice assignments and 100 points for assessments as follows:
Mastery (A) = 90-100 or 9-10
Proficient (B) = 70-89 or 7-8
Approaching Proficient (C) = 50-69 or 5-6
Below Proficient (D) = 20-49 or 1-4
No Evidence (F) = 0-19 or 0
Remember that all assignments and assessments can be redone to show mastery of a skill and change the grade received. Also, all redone and make-up assignments must be completed by the Friday before the end of the term.
