 Weekly Lessons

Our weekly lessons include ... Phonemic Awareness Drills (Heggerty), Letter A Day, Language Arts (McGraw Hill), Math Lessons (Investigations),  and Science Discussions.  In Kindergarten we build pre-reading skills using a blend of phonics and sight words. Students meet in small groups with the teacher for a targeted reading lesson.  We model and and use sound spelling to start kids writing. Building them up to writing narrative and informative stories.  We want our Kindergartners to develop the skills they need to build independence and be ready for First Grade.

  Sight Words

We will introduce this list of Sight Words throughout the year. The team has created a pacing guide to allow for student success. As words are introduced in class you will see them coming home in their work.  These words will be available in the Take Home Binders for additional practice.

  Homework in Kindergarten

We are a half day program. To help build students skills at home we are asking families to do a bit of homework in the evening.

Most ImportantWe are asking families to read together each night. 10 minutes is great...more is fantastic!!  Mrs. Z has put a Homework Log in your students Binder where you can log the books that are read each night.  You can also log any of the skill building activities that you complete/work on from the Yellow sheet in the Binder.  We are hoping for 4 activities per week.

Another Option: Many parents ask for a page that students can work on during the week.  We are sending home each week a page that has simple yet applicable tasks that can be completed at home in the evening.  Students may need help reading directions but should be able to do the activities. We know that each student/family is different. We will not penalize any student for not completing homework, but believe in rewarding hard work!!

Another Option: During the year practice sheets will be placed in the Binder. These pages include practice for letters, sight words, shapes, and numbers. These are great for families on the Go!!
