readingReading

The reading program consists of seven areas as follows:

  • Classroom Reading Units –We use the McGraw Hill Reading Program. It focuses on good reading strategies, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, writing, and whole language elements. We will be supplementing it with trade books used in Literature Circles.
  • Fluency –Everyday students will take 1-2 minutes to practice reading aloud to a partner. They will record their own progress. Some weeks students will receive a Readers Theater to practice. At the end of the week, they will perform with their group. Nothing is memorized. They will read with expression and meaning. This has always been a student favorite.
  • Home Reading –Each student is required to read 20 minutes a night, 5 days a week. Reading 20 minutes a night will improve student’s reading levels quicker, help students gain a love for reading, and assist them in reaching the 40-book challenge for the year.
  • Read Aloud –At different points in the year, I will be reading short novels to the class. This is done to help develop good listening and comprehension skills as well as model correct oral reading speed, expression and error self-correction.
  • Spelling – Words will be taken from their writing, science, social studies, and McGraw-Hill. There will not necessarily be a spelling test weekly.
  • Grammar –We will take small chunks of time to go over grammar skills with the students during writing time. We will use the McGraw Hill program but mainly work with the students as we see mistakes being made in their writing.
  • Writing –I will teach the kids to use descriptive words, cite text evidence, form complete sentences and paragraphs, and how to organize their thoughts . Writing will be required in every curriculum area, not just during the scheduled writing time.

Math is probably the hardest for 6th graders. The math curriculum is extensive. If your child does not know his /her multiplication and division tables, they will struggle the whole year. It is imperative that they know these facts backward and forward.

We will use the Ready Math program. The curriculum covers data and probability, measurement in standard and metric, geometry and spatial relationships, patterns, decimals, fractions, percent, scientific notation, factors, multiples, and graphing on a coordinate graph. We will use hands-on activities to solidify the concepts where applicable.

Math will be taught whole class and in small groups. We have found this gives shy or unconfident students a chance to ask questions and become more successful.

Sixth grade science covers structure and motion in the solar system, how energy affects matter, Earth’s weather patterns and climate, and stability and change in ecosystems. Many of the students will discover Science to be their favorite subject. In the past students have participated in the Science Fair. Because of the virus, it may not happen this year. If the district plans a Science Fair this year, we will participate.

hugging earthSocial Studies

We will use National Geographic books provided by the district. They cover Ancient, European and World Civilizations. Within these areas, we cover time, culture, people and places. Within Social Studies, we will teach strategies to help comprehend non-fiction or expository text.
