🚀 Launch – The teacher introduces the task to students. The launch helps students to understand the task and what they are trying to solve for.

🤔 Explore – This is the part of the lesson where students engage in the task and explore their own thinking. They get to try different ways to solve a problem. Teachers are monitoring students, selecting student work to share, and sequencing how the discussion will go.

💬 Discuss – Discuss is the part of the lesson where the teacher orchestrates a whole class discussion. Teachers strategically decide the order of the discussion and how many students will share in the discussion.

General Information Unit 3

This unit deepens student understanding of our number system, addition, subtraction, and solving story problems. We recommend staying with the scope and sequence and teach each unit in numerical order. Tasks and discussion are developmentally appropriate and build from previously taught units. Each time the concept is presented the depth of knowledge increases. Unit three is approximately 26 days. Student work can be completed right here in Canvas. If you choose to use the Unit tests created by Savass (Pearson), please have students use their Office 365 login credentials and take the test on the Realize Platform.

Learning Outcomes /Benchmarks

By the end of this unit students can:

Understand that you can count on/back to add/subtract.
Understand 10 ones as one ten, and the teen numbers as one ten and a number of ones.
Find at least 5 solutions to a put together/take apart problem with both addends unknown.
Solve story problems with 3 addends.
Rote count, read, and write numbers to 120.
Represent numbers with equivalent expressions.

Standards that can be graded regarding the above learning outcomes.

Priority Standard 1: Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction.

1.OA.1 Use addition and subtraction with 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions.
1.OA.3 Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract. 1.OA.4 Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem.
1.OA.5 Relate counting to addition and subtraction. (counting on or back)
1.OA.6 Add and subtract within 20 using counting on and making 10.
1.OA.7 Understand the meaning of the equal sign and determine whether equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false.
1.OA.8 Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating three whole numbers.

Priority Standard 2: Understand and Use Place Value students are given exposure to concepts

1.NBT.1 Extend the counting sequence to 120
1.NBT.2 Understand that the digits of a number represent the amount of ones and tens.
1.NBT.3 Compare 2-digit numbers.

Note: 1.MD.4 Represent and interpret data is also introduced in this unit with the a routine. It is not a priority standard. It needs to be taught, but not to mastery.

MP 2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
MP 6 Attend to precision.
