Class Overview

About Creative Writing:

Creative Writing 1 & 2 both center on student-paced learning about the art of writing. While Creative Writing 1 focuses more on Poetry, Creative Writing 2 focuses more on Prose and Nonfiction. Both classes are designed to help you write better by reading a lot of great writing and discussing what you like (and don't), and by editing and revising your own writing into a final portfolio at semester's-end.

Class Learning Objectives

You will learn to read and write more critically, and to revise substantively.

  1. Reading for meaning
  2. Discuss the use of style as it pertains to main idea and theme
  3. Write, using conventions of common English
  4. Revise to achieve more proficient writing

Expectations

I expect you to be respectful of each other and the writings of others, first and foremost.

  1. Know that very few are great writers from the beginning. I expect you to try, and to try again!
  2. Read the stories I post, whether for workshop or for homework. Liking or disliking something is a good start to critically understanding, but knowing why you have feelings for a piece of writing is what I expect.
  3. Keep an open mind about literature, and never cut down your own writing, since you'll need to revise it for a portfolio.

Grading Scheme

This is pretty traditional, but know that I always accept late work, and I applaud revisions, always. That said, do your best not to get behind in the modules, because catching up in Creative Writing can be difficult.

A = 90-100

B = 80-89
