Mrs. Hall's Happenings
We had a great first week of school. The students have been working hard, and I’ve really enjoyed getting to know them. They are hard workers and diligent students. I can tell we're going to have a fantastic year!
I enjoyed meeting many of you at Back-to-School Night last week. If you weren't able to attend, your student has brought home a green parent information sheet. Please fill this out and send it back to school. This information helps me best meet the needs of your student.
Thank you so much for all the donations of kleenex, paper, and baby wipes (which we use ALL the time since we don't have a sink). I really appreciate it!
What We’re Learning This Week
We have a new language arts program this year called Amplify ELA. The first few lessons focus on writing. We'll be working on adding detailed descriptions as we write about small moments in our personal narratives.
Also in writing this week students will be introducing themselves through a personal essay.
In math we’ll be learning about area of parallelograms and triangles.
Our first social studies unit will be on early man. We will learn the meaning of the words "prehistory" and "artifacts." We'll also learn about the Neandertals and about how early humans used animals.
We'll be starting our first science unit on the solar system. This week we will learn about the patterns of moon phases.
Book Reports
Students should be reading at least one book each month. (If they want to meet our 30-book challenge, they should be reading 2 books a month). On the last school day of the month, they need to turn in a one-page book report. They can fill out the report for any book they read during that month. I will send home the first one next week. They can turn it any day of the month, but it will be due on September 27. I will be checking in with the students at the end of the week about which book they will be reading for the month. This just helps me keep them on track with their reading.
Classroom Computers
Computers will start coming home next week. Please make sure you've signed the online acceptable use agreement or I cannot send home a computer. I HIGHLY SUGGEST you purchase a protective case for the computer since they will need to be bring it back to forth to school. The computers are 12 in by 8 in. Here is a link to a fairly affordable option that comes in lots of different colors:

We will be leaving the charging cords here at school.
Sixth-Grade Orchestra
Sixth graders have the opportunity to participate in our district orchestra program. We will be having an information meeting on Thursday. Students will bring home a flyer with links to more information.
