Mrs. Hall's Happenings
What We’re Learning This Week
In language arts this week, we will continue to read Roald Dahl's memoir. This week we'll be focusing on interpreting dialogue in a story and looking for details that express emotions.
In math this week we will be finishing Unit 1 on Geometry. Our Unit Test will be on Friday. Students will bring home a review for homework on Thursday night.
Our new unit in social studies is on the world's first civilization, Mesopotamia. This week we'll be completing a map of the fertile crescent and will learn about the Sumerians who lived in this area.
This week in science we will start learning about why Earth has seasons.
How You Can Help Your Sixth Grader Be Successful
1. Check on their homework to make sure they are completing their assignments.
2. Review together any missing work. (I send home missing work letters on Mondays.)
3. Together go over their grades on Canvas. Look at any comments I have written to help them see how they can improve their work. You can find their grades by looking at the GRADES tab in the individual subject areas (Math, Reading, Writing, Science, Social Studies).
4. Make sure they are reading AT LEAST 100 minutes each week. And this means really reading---not just looking at a book and thumbing through the pages. Check in by having them tell you about the book they are reading. Sixth graders should be finishing about 2 books a month. Research shows that students improve their reading ability when they consistently read books at their reading level. Check to see if a book is too difficult with the 5-finger test. Have them open to a random page and read it aloud. If they miss more than 5 words, it is too difficult. I am great at helping kids find books, so let me know if your student needs some help!
