Mrs. Hall's Happenings
What We’re Learning This Week
This week we'll be writing an essay based on our reading of Roald Dahl's memoir, Boy. We will also continue to talk about our class novel, Hatchet. Students should be reading through Chapter 12 this week.
This week in math we will learn some strategies for solving ratio problems.
We'll be finishing our study of Mesopotamia by talking about the Code of Hammurabi, the world's first set of written laws.
And in science, we'll be finishing up seasons and start on learning about the solar system.
September Book Report
This month's book report is due the last school day of the month, September 30. Students need to fill out the one-page report about a book they have finished THIS MONTH. It should be a book they have FINISHED, not just in the middle of reading. They will get the October book report paper next week.
PAWsitive Points Party
The students hit their first points goal last week and voted on an "electronics" party. (Fun fact--sixth graders ALWAYS vote for an electronics party as their first reward. I won't let them choose that reward again.) We will be doing this at the end of the day on Friday. They can play on the school computers or my class iPads. They are also welcome to bring an electronic device from home (bring at their own risk!).
Homework
Just a reminder, students have homework Monday through Thursday. They practice for junior high by writing down their homework assignments in their planner. Students can also see the homework chart under the Sixth Grade course in Canvas (this is the same chart I send home in Monday's email). Students usually have 2 assignments each night: 1) Reading (either vocabulary or comprehension practice) and 2) Math (usually a worksheet). They should also be reading for 20 minutes each night. I am not having them keep track of or turn in their reading minutes, but they need to be reading in order to finish a book for each month's book report. Each night's homework is due the next day in class whether a digital assignment or a paper assignment. Being responsible for completing homework on time is an important skill for success in junior high and beyond.
