Mrs. Hall's Happenings
Happy New Year!
I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing winter break and enjoyed the extra family time!
Thank you for all the Christmas cards, treats, and gifts. You made me feel appreciated! I am truly grateful to work with such a special group of sixth graders.
What We’re Learning This Week
This week in language arts we'll be starting our unit on Greek Mythology. We'll be reading some selections from D'aulaires'Book of Greek Myths and some myths in our Amplify series. This is always one of students' favorite units of the year. If your student hasn't already read Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, that would be a great book to start in January. I handed our the January book report form today. It will be due on Friday, January 31.
In math this week we’ll be focusing on decimal computation--adding, subtracting, and multiplying with decimals. Students need to show their work on their homework or I will not accept it. The standard for sixth grade is students will be able to fluenty compute with decimals. It takes a lot of practice to be fluent!
Our science focus will be on weather systems. This week we'll be learning about how Earth supports life through the greenhouse gases that are in our atmosphere.
In social studies we will be starting our unit on Ancient Greece.
New Term
Today is the first day of the third term! Now is a great time to talk with your student about goals for the second half of the school year. Junior high is right around the corner, and it is important to develop good study habits that will carry over into next year. Report cards will be available online on January 13 at 4:00 p.m.. Parent-teacher conferences will be January 29 and 30
30-Book Challenge
We are halfway through the year, and hopefully your student is halfway through the 30-book challenge! Remember I have challenged students to read 30 books this year (that includes novels we are reading in class). It comes out to about 2 books a month, which is what a sixth grader should be completing if they are reading every day. Students should have a chart in their red homework folder. Please check in with them this week and help them update their chart and see what they need to do to complete the challenge. Students who read 30 books during the year will earn a medal at graduation.
Junior High Registration
Put January 28 on your calendar. Future MPJH students will be going on a brief field trip to the campus (a permission slip will come home next week). Future MJH students will be having a presentation from a MJH counselor at the same time here at Bountiful. All students will be bringing home registration information that night.
