Unit 2 Learning Pathway Outline

The learning pathway of Unit 2 incorporates students modeling their mathematical thinking from contexts involving joining or separating quantities. Their representations of the relationships among the quantities (as arrangements of objects, as pictures, or in the form of equations) are mathematical models. The goal is for students to use all three modes of modeling. While students eventually learn how to represent quantity with numerals, they must also retain the ability to represent quantity with objects, and pictures, for it is through representations with objects and pictures that many quantitative relationships are revealed. Students will repeatedly engage in routines and over time this will allow students to notice the same thing arising. As they notice some of these things across contexts, they build abstractions. It is important for teachers to encourage students to express what they notice as it will strengthen their ideas and expose the class to a range of observations.
