- Points 0
Jade bought 24 cupcakes for her birthday party. She wants to share the 24 cupcakes evenly among 8 children.
How many cupcakes will each child receive?
What strategies did you use to solve this?
Did you make an array by placing the cupcakes into 8 rows?
Did you separate them out into eight groups?
24รท8=3
There are 24 total cupcakes.
There are 8 groups, group size.
There are 3 cupcakes in each group, size of group.
So we have:
totalรทnumberofgroups=groupsize
How could we turn 24รท8=3 into a multiplication equation?
numberofgroupsรsizeofeachgroup=total
8ร3=24
This type of division is called partitive or fair-sharing.
Partitive division or fair-sharing division is when the number of groups is known (how many bags we are putting the total into) and the size of group is the answer (how many items in each bag).
