There are 8 groups, group size.

There are 3 cupcakes in each group, size of group.

So we have:

$total\:\div number\:of\:groups\:=\:group\:size$

How could we turn $24\div8=3$ into a multiplication equation?

$number\:of\:groups\:\times size\:of\:each\:group\:=\:total$

$8\times3=24$

This type of division is called partitive or fair-sharing.

Partitive division or fair-sharing division is when the number of groups is known (how many bags we are putting the total into) and the size of group is the answer (how many items in each bag).
