Jade bought 24 cupcakes for her birthday party. She wants each child to receive 3 cupcakes.

How many children will she be able to serve?

What strategies did you use to solve this?

Did you make an array by placing the cupcakes into 3 rows?

Did you separate them out into groups of size 3?

$24\div3=8$

There are 24 total cupcakes.

There are 8 groups, group size.

There are 3 cupcakes in each group, size of group.

So we have:

$total\:\div\:group\:size\:=\:number\:of\:groups$

How could we turn $24\div3=8$ into a multiplication equation?

$number\:of\:groups\:\times size\:of\:each\:group\:=\:total$

$8\times3=24$

This type of division is called quotative, measurement, or repeated subtraction.

Quotative division or measurement division is when the size of group is known (how many items in each bag)  and the number of groups is the answer (how many bags we are putting the total into).
