How would you represent this on the place value mat?

Answer:  2 rows of 8 units in the ones place.

This makes 16 units!  Hm!  Is it okay to have 16 units in the ones place? No.  

You need to regroup.  Collect ten units and make a rod.  Then move the rod to the tens place (because that is where rods go).

We have 1 ten and 6 ones.  This is 16.

2) 5 x 6 = ?

How would you represent this on the place value mat?

This makes 30 units!  Hm!  Is it okay to have 30 units in the ones place? No.  

Are there any tens you can collect to regroup to make a rod.  

Is there enough to exchange another rod?  Keep going until you cannot make a  rod.
