1) Model 2 x 3 and 2 x 30 on a place value mat.

How is 2 x 3  similar to 2 x 30?

Notice that they both have "6" blocks.

How is 2 x 3 different from 2 x 30?

2 x 3 has 6 ones and 2 x 30 has 6 tens. There are 6 ones compared to 6 tens.

2) 2 x 80 = ?

2 rows of 8 ten rods.  

(If this was 2 x 8, it would be 2 rows of 8 units.)

How many ten rods are there?

Can we have 16 rods in the tens place? 

Let's regroup.  10 rods is a hundred flat.  Can we make more flats?

We now have 1 hundred flat and 6 ten rods.  This is 160.

How is 2 x 8  similar to 2 x 80?  Did you need to regroup for 2 x 8?
