Each friend needs 2 tickets (Ferris Wheel)and 4 tickets (roller coaster).  This is 6 tickets for each friend.

There are 5 friends. 5 groups of 6 tickets.

The expression is then:  5 x (4 + 2).

The parentheses tell us which operation to perform first.  For this problem, the parentheses are required because the addition comes first.
