Here m represents what we don't know.  

m is a variable.  A variable represents a "blank" or something that is unknown in an equation or expression.

6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 10 = m

We could also write an equation using multiplication and a variable.

4 x 6 + 10 = m

As we solve the problem.

24 + 10 = m

34 = m

Martha will spend $34 on frames.
