Let's continue on your Fractions...recording sheet.

Look at a yellow hexagon.  This is our whole

Part 1

Place 2 yellow hexagons side by side.  There are now 2 wholes being considered.

6.6 two hexagon.JPG

What is the fraction?

  • LaTeX: \frac{2}{1}21
  • The numerator of 2 means there are two parts being counted.  The denominator of 1 means the whole is one piece.
  • There are 2 wholes.

Where would this fraction be placed on our number line?

  • Under the 2.

Why?

  • LaTeX: \frac{2}{1}21= 2
  • Think of eating two whole cookies without cutting them.

Part 2

Cover your yellow hexagons with red trapezoids.

What fraction could be written to represent this model?

  • LaTeX: \frac{4}{2}42
  • The whole is being shared with 2 (denominator) and 4 portions are being considered (numerator).

Where would LaTeX: \frac{4}{2}42be recorded on the number line?

  • Under the 2 because LaTeX: \frac{4}{2}42= 2.

Part 3

Now cover the yellow hexagons with blue rhombi, brown trapezoids, and green triangles.

The blue rhombi represent what fraction?

  • LaTeX: \frac{6}{3}63

The brown trapezoids represent what fraction?

  • LaTeX: \frac{8}{4}84

The green triangles represent what fraction?

  • LaTeX: \frac{12}{6}126

Where would we place these fractions on our number line?

  • Underneath the 2.  LaTeX: \frac{6}{3}63, LaTeX: \frac{8}{4}84, LaTeX: \frac{12}{6}126are all equivalent to 2.
