Who is most likely to go outside to play first?

The answer to this question depends on many things.  

• If the homework is the same amount, Toby will go first because he has completed more.
• If Mariah works faster then she will finish first. 

• Could Toby's homework be longer?
• Could Mariah work slower?

b)

Let's change things a bit.

Which fraction is greater $\frac{1}{4}$ or $\frac{1}{3}$?

• This comparison only works if both homework sheets are the same size and the children work at the same speed.

So, which is greater?

• Use your fraction circles to assist.

• The $\frac{1}{4}$takes 4 copies or iterations to make the whole.
• The $\frac{1}{3}$takes 3 iterations to make the whole.
• The $\frac{1}{3}$has more area.  Fewer are needed to make the whole.  $\frac{1}{3}$is greater.
