📊Math G3 L7.1 🤔Explore A1 - Time on a Number Line
- Due No Due Date
- Points 0
For this lesson you will use the Fillable Time Line 1 and 2 found in the student pages, scissors, and glue sticks. You will also need your math journal.
(voice explanation)
Part 1
- This is an analog clock.
- This clock has an hour hand (short hand)
- This clock has a minute hand (long hand)
- The numbers 1 to 12 are equally spaced around the clock.
- There are 5 spaces between each number.
What do the numbers mean?
- The numbers represent the hours, when reading the hours.
-
The numbers represent a group of 5 when reading the minutes.
- The spaces between are one minute intervals.
- Counting from :00 (minute hand on the 12), each tick mark is 1 minute.
-
On the clock below, the minute hand (long hand) is on the 9.
- This means there are 9 groups of 5, which is 45.
- The minutes are :45
-
On the clock below, the hour hand (short hand) is past the 1, but not yet at 2.
- The hour is 1
- The time on the clock is 1:45.
Part 2
(voice explanation)
Today we are going to map time on a number line.
Just like whole numbers and fractions, time can also be marked on the number line.
We will do this in your math journals
- Begin by drawing an open number line.
- Make a tick mark to label as 12:00 a.m. (midnight)
- Then make another tick mark and mark as 1:00 a.m.
- Continue making equally spaced tick marks to mark 2:00 a.m., 3:00 a.m. until you reach 12:00 p.m. (or noon).
Part 3
(voice explanation)
What is the difference between 11:59 a.m. and 12:01 p.m.?
- The first is a minute before noon. The second is a minute after noon.
What is the difference between 11:59 p.m. and 12:01 a.m.?
- The first is a minute before midnight (and the day before). The second is a minute after midnight.
What does the a.m. and p.m. tell us?
- a.m. are the hours between midnight and noon. These hours are often thought of as "morning".
- p.m. are the hours between noon and midnight. These hours are often thought of as "night", "afternoon", "evening".
Part 4
(voice explanation)
Continue your number line to include the hours from noon to midnight.
Notice there are arrows at the beginning and ending of your number line. This means that time continues before your line began and will continue after.
