Part 1

The first clock:

  • Has the hour hand (red or shorter hand) at 3.  
    • The hour hand tells us the hour of the day.  
    • We are in the 3 o'clock hour.
  • Has the minute hand (blue or longer hand) at 12.
    • The minute hand tells us how many minutes we are into the hour.
    • When the minute had points at the 12 we are at the beginning of the hour.
  • The time is 3:00 "3 o'clock".

The second clock:

  • Has the hour hand (red or shorter hand) at 3.  
    • The hour hand tells us the hour of the day.  
    • We are in the 3 o'clock hour.
  • Has the minute hand (blue or longer hand) on the 1.
    • When we are counting minutes, each numeral on the clock represents 5 minutes.
    • We are 5 minutes into the 3 o'clock hour.
  • The time is 3:05 "3 oh 5".

 

The individual minutes are counted between each number.

If you look at the clock, there are tick marks between each numeral.  The tick marks each represent 1 minute.

This clock has the minute hand pointing to one tick mark past the numeral 1.  We are 6 minutes into the 3 o'clock hour.  The time is 3:06 "3 oh 6".

 

Part 2

Let's practice counting by 5.

0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60...

Now look at the clock.

0 minutes is at 3 o'clock

5 minutes--the minute hand is on the numeral 1

10 minutes--the minute hand is on the numeral 2

15 minutes--the minute hand is on the numeral 3

20 minutes--the minute hand is on the numeral 4

25 minutes--the minute hand is on the numeral 5

30 minutes--the minute hand is on the numeral 6

35 minutes--the minute hand is on the numeral 7

40 minutes--the minute hand is on the numeral 8

45 minutes--the minute hand is on the numeral 9

50 minutes--the minute hand is on the numeral 10

55 minutes--the minute hand is on the numeral 11

60 minutes--the minute hand is on the numeral 12

When we get to the 12 the minute hand has completed one circle of the clock.  The hour is over.  We are in the next hour.
