Activity Make a 3D Geographical Map
This activity is due by the end of next week.
I would like to have everyone's turned in by Sunday, December 19th.
Have fun!
Learning Objective: I can build and label a 3D geographical map.
- In the previous lessons, you learned all the features of maps.
- In this lesson, you will build a 3D geographical map with land formations.
- Your map needs to include a valley, hill, mountain, ocean, river, plateau, plain, peninsula, island, coast, and lake landforms. You will need to label each of these features with the correct name.
Instructions:
1- Gather your chosen materials.
- You will need a paper plate or piece of cardboard to build on.
-
You are free to choose your own medium, or material, with which to build your map. Some examples include: salt dough, play dough, model magic, constructions paper, pipe cleaners and other craft items, or even Legos!
Just remember that whatever material you use, your map should be 3D (stand off the page) and be in color!
-
- If you choose, use the following salt dough recipe to make your dough. (It may be tempting to double it, but if you use too much dough, your map will take too long to dry.)
-
Salt Dough Recipe: 1 cup flour
½ cup of salt
½ cup of water
Mix all ingredients together well. Separate portions and color with food dye, or use paints to paint your landforms after your map has dried.

2- Use the Example Geographical Map Download Example Geographical Map picture as a guide to help you build your 3D geographical map.
- Your map does not have to look exactly like this one, but should include all eleven landforms listed, which are a valley, hill, mountain, ocean, river, plateau, plain, peninsula, island, coast, and lake.
3- You will be graded in the following areas:
- Do you have all the landforms? (valley, hill, mountain, ocean, river, plateau, plain, peninsula, island, coast, and lake)
- Are your landforms distinguishable from those around it?
- Do your landforms look like their label? (a river should look like a river, not a lake or a pond.)
- Is your map 3D?
- Is it in color and looks realistic? (colored materials/painted)
4- Click on the "Submit Assignment" button (upper right hand side).
- Record a video showing and explaining your 3D map.
