Benchmarks
We will be working on some "Foundational Benchmarks" during the school year. This is a schoolwide effort. Specifically for fourth grade, the foundational benchmarks are fairly basic, and are listed by term.
By the end of the 1st term, third graders should:
- be able to read grade-level text at a rate of at least 70 words per minute (wpm)
- have math multiplication facts 1-5 memorized (up to 5 x 10), meaning that they know the answer within 3 seconds
- be able to write a complete sentence with subject and predicate, including correct capitalization and punctuation
- be able to type at least 5 words per minute
By the end of the 2nd term, third graders should:
- be able to read grade-level text at a rate of at least 80 words per minute (wpm)
- have math multiplication facts 6 - 10 memorized (up to 10 x 10) , meaning that they know the answer within 3 seconds
- write a descriptive personal narrative
- be able to type at least 10 words per minute
By the end of the 3rd term, third graders should:
- be able to read grade-level text at a rate of at least 900 words per minute (wpm)
- have math division facts (up to 10 divided by 5) memorized, meaning that they know the answer within 3 seconds
- be able to write an informational essay with a main idea, supporting facts, and a conclusion
- be able to type at least 15 words per minute
By the end of the 4th term, third graders should:
- be able to read grade-level text at a rate of at least 100 words per minute (wpm)
- have math division facts (up to 100 divided by 10) memorized, meaning that they know the answer within 3 seconds
- be able to write an argumentative/persuasive essay with at least three supporting statements
- be able to type at least 15 words per minute with 98% accuracy
By the end of the 1st term, fourth graders should:
- be able to read grade-level text at a rate of at least 90 words per minute (wpm)
- have math multiplication facts 1-6 memorized (up to 6 X 12), meaning that they know the answer within 3 seconds
- be able to write a complete sentence with subject and predicate, including correct capitalization and punctuation
- be able to type at least 10 words per minute
By the end of the 2nd term, fourth graders should:
- be able to read grade-level text at a rate of at least 100 words per minute (wpm)
- have math multiplication facts 7-12 memorized (up to 12 X 12), meaning that they know the answer within 3 seconds
- write a descriptive personal narrative
- be able to type at least 15 words per minute
By the end of the 3rd term, fourth graders should:
- be able to read grade-level text at a rate of at least 110 words per minute (wpm)
- have math division facts (up to 72 divided by 6) memorized, meaning that they know the answer within 3 seconds
- be able to write an informational essay with a main idea, supporting facts, and a conclusion
- be able to type at least 20 words per minute
By the end of the 4th term, fourth graders should:
- be able to read grade-level text at a rate of at least 120 words per minute (wpm)
- have math division facts (up to 144 divided by 12) memorized, meaning that they know the answer within 3 seconds
- be able to write a persuasive essay with at least three supporting statements, and edit writing for content and errors
- be able to type at least 20 words per minute with 98% accuracy
