Class Overview

About 7th Grade Math

The Bountiful Junior High Math Department is dedicated to giving students opportunities to succeed and realize individual goals of content mastery.  We believe that term grades should reflect content mastery.  Students will be given opportunities to practice what they are learning to increase their accuracy, fluency, and understanding.  Without practice, students most likely will not be able to prove content mastery when assessed.  Completing ALL practice work and taking complete notes in class will allow students more than one opportunity to show mastery. We also invite open and frequent communication between student, parent, and teacher to ensure individual needs and concerns are addressed.

Class Learning Objectives

In Grade 7, we focus on four critical areas:

  1. Developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships.
  2. Developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations.
  3. Solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume.
  4. Drawing inferences about populations based on samples.

As we work, students will also:

  • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  • Make sense of quantities and their relationships in problem situations.
  • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
  • Apply mathematics to solve problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace.
  • Use appropriate tools strategically.
  • Attend to precision.
  • Look for and make use of structure.
