What is HARMONY?
Harmony is the last Principle of Design we talk about because it incorporates all of the others. A harmonious design makes good use of all the Elements and Principles of Design.
HARMONY is achieved by balancing the following:
- VARIETY (Things that are different) – when the design has differences to create interest
- UNITY (Things that are alike)– a sense of completeness, when nothing is missing, left out or undone
How are the outfits in the collection above in HARMONY? What do they have in common and what parts are different?
YOUR ASSIGNMENT:
You are hired as a fashion designer for your own line! You are required to create 3 harmonious looks in order to get approved for production. These designs must have enough UNITY (similar qualities) and VARIETY (different qualities) to create the harmony you’d like portrayed in your line. Decide how you will use the elements and principles of design to achieve this with your 3 designs.
Your designs can be done on paper or you can do them using an online design program like Procreate Links to an external site. or other design/art apps you like to use.
WHAT YOU WILL TURN IN:
- A picture of your 3 designs that are harmonious with each other. A balance of UNITY and VARIETY need to be clearly illustrated. Something like the example below shows how each outfit is unique but all of them go together nicely.
- If you need croquis, see Mrs. Bundy
All three of these designs have things in common, yet are different in their own way.
UNITY: They feature a nude/cream base color, they feature a similar belt, they all have fringe
VARIETY: Each main color of the outfit is different, each outfit features dots in their own unique way
