Informational Writing Checklist

Introduction Paragraph

____          I indented my first paragraph

____          My introduction begins with a hook that captures my readers attention.

Examples: Start with a question or Use phrases like Imagine…, or Think of a time…

____          My introduction states my topic or main idea and then gives three reasons that will support my topic

____          I used at least two different kinds of sentences in my introduction.

Examples: questions, exclamations or statements

Middle Paragraphs

____          I indented my paragraph and started with a capital letter

____          I started my paragraph with a transition word

____          I started my paragraph by restating my (first, second, third) details

____          I supported each detail with examples taken directly from the text

____          I used a citation phrase to give credit to my source. (According to _____, In the article, _____ stated…)

____          I supported the citation with my own thoughts

____          I didn’t start any of my sentences with And, But, So, Because, or Why I

____          I used at least three different types of sentences. (Questions, Exclamations, Statements, Commands)
