Vocabulary/Spelling: FRENCH language of origin
The Spelling Bee list gives us a GREAT opportunity to learn more powerful vocabulary words and also to learn more about their language of origin. Knowing the origin of a word can help us understand how it is spelled and pronounced.
For this assignment, you will be using our Spelling Bee list to study words that originated in these languages: French, Anglo-Saxon, Latin, and Greek. If you are working from home, grab some pieces of lined paper.
- On the first day, focus on finding at least 10 words that come directly from FRENCH.
- For each of your 10 words, include a complete definition. Also, use them (correctly!!) in a sentence. The sentence should be your own, of course (not the one you see in the Spelling Bee definitions).
- After you have at least 10 words that originated from French, identify at least two things that you noticed about the words. Do these words share any spelling/pronunciation patterns?
If you are working from home, you should finish the 10 French words today. We'll identify words of Anglo-Saxon, Latin and Greek origin in the coming days.
If you are working from home, make sure to turn in your work when you return to class!
