First Read- Read the text as a class. This week we are focusing on the author's point of view.
Sometimes in an informational text, authors reveal a perspective or viewpoint about the topic or events they write about. Though authors of historical accounts generally adopt a neutral or objective point of view, sometimes a clear positive or negative attitude emerges.
- To determine an author’s point of view, readers look carefully at the words, phrases, and other details authors use to describe people, ideas, and events.
- Then they decide whether the words and phrases convey an attitude of support or disapproval of the topic.
- Active readers ask themselves whether the author presents a biased point of view—a view that excludes important information or presents only one side of a subject. Biased points of view, whether negative or positive, affect readers complete understanding of topics and events.
