"When You Reach Me" Chapters 1-7

When You Reach Me by Rebeca Stead is a mystery novel. As a class, we will read When You Reach Me over the next 3 weeks. We will be studying the characters, discussing themes, learning new vocabulary and making predictions as we read the story. The link below will get you to a pdf copy of the book, you may not download or print this, just read on a device while at school.

Some days Mrs. E will read the story to you and other times, you will read in a group or on your own. We will be answering questions about the chapters as we go.

Monday and Tuesday (May 2nd and 3rd)

  • Pre-reading- look at the front cover- Have you read anything by this author before? If so, what is it?
  • What do you think of the cover art? Does it give you any hints about what the story will be about?
  • Read over this summary of the book- What does this help you learn about the story?
    • Four mysterious letters change Miranda's world forever.

By sixth grade, Miranda and her best friend, Sal, know how to navigate their New York City neighborhood. They know where it's safe to go, like the local grocery store, and they know whom to avoid, like the crazy guy on the corner.

But things start to unravel. Sal gets punched by a new kid for what seems like no reason, and he shuts Miranda out of his life. The apartment key that Miranda's mom keeps hidden for emergencies is stolen. And then Miranda finds a mysterious note scrawled on a tiny slip of paper:

I am coming to save your friend’s life, and my own.
I must ask two favors. First, you must write me a letter.

The notes keep coming, and Miranda slowly realizes that whoever is leaving them knows all about her, including things that have not even happened yet. Each message brings her closer to believing that only she can prevent a tragic death. Until the final note makes her think she's too late.
  • Over the next two days, read the first 7 chapters today (don't worry, they are short!)
  • We will do some comprehension activities on Tuesday
