Parent Resources

Here are a few tips or answers questions that you may have:

 Behavior

I am very understanding that second graders are learning to find their voice, their personalities, and working to see where they fit in. We have four rules, 1- Follow Directions. 2- Do your best. 3- Use kind words. 4- Raise your hand. DoJo points are awarded for following these rules, and natural consequences are attributed when these rules are not being followed. Consequences are as follows: 1st time- Students are given a chance to take a break to find self-control and address why the behavior is happening. 2nd time- Student needs to find a way to fix the situation. 3rd time- Logical consequence that fits the poor behavior. 4th time- Loss of privilege, and the parent will be notified. Administration will be involved when a student has had multiple loss of privileges or has endangered themselves or another student.

Birthdays and Star Students

Your child is welcome to bring a treat for his or her birthday. He or she will be recognized by the class at the end of school day. If we are off during your child’s birthday, we will celebrate it either before or after the break.

I like to make your child feel like an important part of our class so I will be highlighting each child in what I call "STAR OF THE WEEK." During this week the featured child will be given a poster to fill out and will be put in the hallway in our "STAR OF THE WEEK" board. Your child may also bring in items that they treasure on Monday of his or her week. They may include a favorite toy, animal, doll, game, awards, book, tape, treat, or anything that tells a little more ABOUT THEM. I try to have their week around their birthday. I will send home a note to remind your child to bring his or her items for their week.

Alternative Seating

Once the school year is underway, I will evaluate the behavior of each student and will possibly offer seating choices that include standing, sitting on the floor, exercise balls, etc. These seating options are a privilege and if not used properly will be taken for the day, the week, the month, or permanently depending on how the seating is being misused. If a student purposely destroys a seating option that has been provided, that student may be asked to replace or pay for the item.

Supply List

What does your child need for school? Any of the items needed for school are provided by the school district or me. I do not allow the students to write with pens or color pencils or to have pencil sharpeners at their desk. Students will need their own headphones. The items on this donation list will be used during the regular school day. They may be brought from home on a voluntary basis, otherwise, they will be furnished by the school. If you find a good deal or would like to donate any of these items, they will be used by the entire 2nd grade throughout the year.

Book Orders

Please encourage your child to read at home. Having interesting books on hand is the best way to do this. To encourage books in the home, we will be participating in the Scholastic Book Club. Normally an order form will come home about once a month, but this year I will be unable to send this home. There is no obligation or pressure to buy anything ever. This is offered as a service to you because the prices are very reasonable. Also, with every book order our class gets a free book or two. I would like to build a large library in our room for free reading time. Children will never be pressured to buy, nor will they receive rewards for ordering. Please do what is best for you and your child. It is an easy and free way to get things for the children to enjoy in the classroom.  Book orders can be placed online at clubs.scholastic.com Links to an external site. our class code is MW4NN.
