* Frequently Asked Questions *

Q: Are there any required supplies?

Students are expected to come to live lessons prepared to learn. They should always have a notebook and a writing utensil. A whiteboard and dry-erase marker are recommended, too!

Q: How can I help my student with Canvas?

Our district has created a helpful set Top 10 for parents Links to an external site. to help their students with our learning platform, Canvas. I recommend creating an observer account (their #1 tip).

Q: How does my student log into Canvas?

Q: What if my student doesn’t know their username/password?

  • Log into your MyDSD parent account. The MyDSD link is on the top right of the DSD homepage. https://www.davis.k12.ut.us/ Links to an external site.
  • Click the Tools menu at the top of the screen
  • Select Reset Student Password
  • Type in your parent password again
  • For Elementary students, you (as the parent) will need to click on “show credentials” to see their user ID and Pin.

Q: What if I don’t have a parent MyDSD account?

  • Go to myDSD on the DSD homepage and choose Create an Account.
  • You will be asked for your email.
  • If a guardian email address is on file, you will be sent an email to finish setting up the account.
  • If the email isn’t on file, you will need the student ID and pin.
  • If you know the student ID but not the pin, you can continue without an email address.

Q: Can I (as a parent) help with assignments and assessments?

Just like in-person learning, I know students are going to need support at home -- and I encourage it! Please support your student in attempting problems independently first, though. It may get frustrating at times, but we need to find the “sweet spot” where learning happens.

On assessments (including the diagnostics that will be opened the first week), please do not help your student find answers. You are welcome to help read math problems, but please do not give hints about how to find a solution. I know it will be hard to see your student struggle, but I need to know your student’s ability (not yours!) in order to support their learning.

Q: How do I know what my student's grades are?

If you have an observer account, just click on grades.  It will tell you which assignments have been completed, what the score is, and have any comments I made about the work.

It is much better to check grades rather than just to see if their "to do" list for the day is completed.  They can submit a blank or incomplete assignment and it will show as "done" but the grades show the final score!

Canvas grades include ALL assignments I give students.  Only the assessments will be recorded in Encore and those grades are the ones that are counted as final.

Q: Do you accept late work?

Assignments for the day will open up right the week of the live zoom lessons. They will have a due date in Canvas, but I do not take points away for late work.

Please note the caveat that I cannot guarantee that I will be able to open assignments for late work at the end of the term. I will send many, many reminders that the end of term is approaching and ask that you work with your student throughout the term to monitor their missing work.

Q: Are live lessons required?

Live lessons are a critical piece of our instruction and I expect all students to attend. For times they are unable to attend due to illness or an unavoidable absence, students are expected to watch the Zoom recording before completing the day’s work.

Q: How do we join live lessons?

My Zoom information will be the same for every live lesson and for any small groups. Use the log-in on any Canvas page to join at the scheduled time. There is a waiting room.  If your child has a zoom session with a TA, their zoom link will be on the schedule page.

Q: Are students required to show video while on a Zoom lesson?

Students are expected to participate with their cameras on. They will be expected to chat answers to me, answer aloud or hold up their written answers to the camera.  Please contact me if you feel there are extenuating circumstances regarding this issue..

 Q: What about specials/prep classes?

3rd grade has a live prep class each Tuesday at 2:45.  The Specials page has links to pre-recorded lessons and activities.
