Course Description:

In this course we will be exploring our world and other worlds from various perspectives and genres of writing.  We will navigate through elements of writing and editing while we create magic with the tips of our own wands (AKA pens).  To help students be successful in accomplishing these tasks, students will:

  • Write arguments, explanatory texts, and research projects using relevant evidence to convey information clearly through selection, organization, and analysis of content.
  • Write literary pieces to develop real or imagined experiences, events, or emotions using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structures sequences.
  • Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience
  • Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach.
  • Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others.
  • Write routinely over extended time frames and shorter time frames for a range of tasks, purpose, and audiences.

Plagiarism: I will not tolerate plagiarism.  Any student caught plagiarizing (trying to pass someone else’s words/writing as his or her own) will receive a zero score on that assignment.  The assignments cannot be made up. The second offense will result in an “F” and a “U” for the term.

Late Work Policy:

All work is expected to be turned in on time.

If a student needs extra time, work assigned before midterm will be accepted late, with no penalty, up until the midterm deadline.

Any work assigned after midterm, will be accepted up until the end of term deadline.

Students wanting to do retake/redo any quizzes, test, or essays must have all assignments related to quiz, test, or essay before they are allowed to retake/redo.

If any students are seen to be taking advantage of the late work policy, a contract will be made about late work, which could cause late work to be penalized or not accepted.

Absent Work: Students are responsible to find out what they missed in class.  Students will have until the end of the current mid-term or term to make up any missing assignments that was done during their absence.  Students should turn any assignments in with an ABSENT card stapled to the FRONT of the assignment (or turn in an ABSENT card to the turn in box for any assignment submitted through Canvas) in order to receive credit.  These cards can be used on all assignments EXCEPT project-based assignments for full credit on a late assignment.  If there was an assignment due on the day/s they were absent, they MUST turn that assignment in the day they return to class with an ABSENT card stapled to the FRONT of the assignment in order to receive credit.  Any work that is not submitted by the final deadline for mid-term or final term grades will not be accepted.  NO RETAKES ARE ALLOWED UNLESS ALL THE WORK FOR THE GIVEN SKILL IS COMPLETED AND TURNED IN.

*Note: If you abuse the late work policy, you will be put on a contract and will not be allowed to turn late work in for credit.

Literary Studies: We will be reading various literary sources with might include, but are not limited to:

  • Personal choice reading books

Materials: Students are required to be prepared and ready to learn every day in class.  They need to have the following materials with them EVERY DAY:

  • Multiple colored pens, pencils, or highlighters for peer-editing and close reading activities
  • A personal book to read

*Note: Students are allowed to make up 3 tardies after school in any given term.  Each tardy requires 15 minutes of time from the student.

Absences: Four or more unexcused absences will result in an automatic “U.”  Absences and tardies beyond four is a cause for concern and result in having a conference with Mrs. Eggli.  Further problems mean getting parents and administration involved.
