This module includes an in depth look at the five major Native American tribes that were located here in Utah.
🌎Activity #1: Native American Tribes in Utah
This is an introductory activity to the five main Native American tribes that lived here in Utah. Students will read a short article that broadly discusses these tribes and watch a short video. They will then respond to a question and share their ideas with their classmates on a platform of the teachers choosing. Vocabulary terms: Ute, Paiute, Goshute, Shoshone, Navajo
NOTE TO TEACHER: You will need to decide on which platform you would like your students to share their assignments. You could have them share using Flipgrid, in a Teams or Zoom meeting, or in person.
🌎Activity #2: Great Basin Tribes of Utah: Ute, Paiute, Goshute, and Shoshone
This activity is designed to teach students about the Great Basin Tribes of Utah, and the impact they have on Utah in the past and present day . Students will be reading an article from Newsela titled "Native American Cultures: The Great Basin." After reading the article they will answer questions related to the text and submit their responses using the online text entry submission tool.
NOTE: If you have not yet synced your class with Newsela you will need to do this first so your students have access to the article and activities you choose to assign in the program. The activities listed in the module can be modified to accommodate activities assigned within Newsela. The questions can also be copied and pasted into a word document if that is the teacher preference.

🌎Activity #3: Southwest Tribe of Utah: The Navajo
This activity is designed to teach students about the Southwest Tribe of Utah, and the impact they have on Utah in the past and present day . Students will be reading an article from Newsela titled "Native American Cultures: The Southwest." After reading the article they will answer questions related to the text and submit their responses using the online text entry submission tool.
NOTE: If you have not yet synced your class with Newsela you will need to do this first so your students have access to the article and activities you choose to assign in the program. The activities listed in the module can be modified to accommodate activities assigned within Newsela. 🌎Activity #4: Native American Homes

Students will begin this module by discovering the types of homes the Native Americans in Utah built and lived in. Vocabulary words will be introduced and defined throughout the lesson and include: home, permanent, temporary, teepee, wickiup, pithouse, and hogan.
NOTE: You will need to copy the Nearpod from the DSD library into your personal Nearpod library and then add it as an External Tool under Submission Type. See instructional video below:
