I will know what a river is and how it is formed.  I will understand the importance of rivers in a community and identify the major rivers found in Utah.

Understanding the physical features and natural resources that surround you in your environment is extremely important.  In today's lesson you will be learning about the rivers that are found in Utah and the impact they can have on the people who live in the state.  You will also be identifying the major rivers found in Utah and placing them on your Interactive Map of Utah.

  1. Read the article from Newsela titled "Bodies of Water: Rivers" Article link Links to an external site.
  2. After reading the article answer the questions below.
  3. Access the following website to locate the following rivers to add to your Utah Interactive Map: Bear River, Weber River, Jordan River, Provo River, Spanish Fork River, Green River, Colorado River, San Juan River, Fremont River, Dirty Devil River, Muddy Creek, San Rafael River, White River, Duchesne River, Sevier River and Virgin River. http://ilovehistory.utah.gov/place/land/maps/water.html#map Links to an external site.
  4. Make sure that you clearly label the rivers on your interactive map and that you add a symbol for the rivers in your map key that is different from your lake symbol. 

Questions:

  1. In 2-3 complete sentences, explain why rivers are important to people, plants and animals.
  2. Identify 3 ways rivers can form.
  3. How did the Colorado River form the Grand Canyon? How long did it take?
  4. Define what a delta is?
  5. In 2-3 complete sentences, explain how humans depend on rivers, other than for food or water.
