๐ŸŽฏObjective:

I can use information from text to write a response to a writing prompt.

Success Criteria:

I wrote an opinion writing piece with details from Jacob Riis Champion of the Poor and The Fight for Equality that answers the prompt.

This week's resources:

1. This week's texts:
Jacob Riis Champion of the Poor.pdf Download Jacob Riis Champion of the Poor.pdfPreview the document

2. This week's reading graphic organizer:
Main Idea and Details Download Main Idea and DetailsPreview the document

3. Prompt: In your opinion, who made a bigger difference in their community, Jacob Riis or Sylvia Mendez. Use examples from the texts to support your opinion.

Day 2 Instructions:

Today we will be continuing our reading of the two biographies, Jacob Riis, Champion of the Poor  and The Fight for Equality.

As you read, think of how the information helps you answer the following Prompt:

In your opinion, who made a bigger difference in their community, Jacob Riis or Sylvia Mendez (The Fight for Equality). Use examples from the texts to support your opinion.

Remember you will write a response to this prompt later in the week using details from Jacob Riis, Champion of the Poor and The Fight for Equality.

Read Chapter 3 of Jacob Riis, , "The Battle to Clean Up the Slums" and all of "A Fight for Equality". As you read, take notes using the Main Ideas and Details graphic organizer listed above -- use one organizer for each chapter. When considering the main idea, ask yourself, "What is this chapter mostly about? And how is Sylvia Mendez making a difference?" Then choose important details from the chapter that support the main idea and add them to your organizer. Save these notes somewhere you can easily find them.
