🌎Railroad and Immigrants TEACHER INSTRUCTIONS (DO NOT PUBLISH)
🌎Activity #1: Introduction and Vocabulary Nearpod and Combined Newsela Article
THIS IS A NEARPOD THAT HAS BEEN CREATED IN CONJUNCTION WITH NEWSELA. YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR CLASS IS SYNCED IN NEWSELA AND THAT THEY CAN ACCESS THEIR ACCOUNTS. ALSO, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU BREAK THIS LESSON INTO TWO 45 MINUTE SESSIONS AND TAKE CARE TO TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE SENSITIVE TOPICS INCLUDED (NATIVE AMERICANS AND CHINESE IMMIGRANT WORKERS).
Students will begin this module by learning about the changes that came to Utah when the transcontinental railroad came to be and how the railroad contributed to the development of our great state. Vocabulary words will be introduced and defined throughout the lesson and include: locomotive, notorious, ramshackle, transcontinental, toil

🌎Activity #2: Time Machine (1869): Completion of the Great Transcontinental Railroad
If you have not yet synced your class with Newsela you will need to do this first so your students have access to the article and activities you choose to assign in the program. The activities listed below can be modified to accommodate activities assigned within Newsela. See the teacher instructions for more information.

Select the lexile level appropriate for your class, 550L is on a third grade level, while 840L is a fifth grade level. Preview the articles first to find the best fit for your class.
🌎Activity #3: Golden Spike 150 Year Anniversary Celebration
Students will watch the video in this lesson to learn about what happened on the day that the golden spike was driven and they final railroad track was laid. The video for this lesson is embedded as an mp4 file and should work on the students screen without them leaving Canvas. In the event that this doesn't work, here is the YouTube link:

Answers to the questions:
1. May 10, 1869
2. Promontory Point is located 1 1/2 hours north of Salt Lake City.
3. The railroad completion has been equated to the building of the ancient pyramids in Egypt.
4. The Union Pacific started in Omaha, Nebraska and moved west. The Central Pacific railroad started in Sacramento, California and moved east.
5. The Union Pacific had one day in Wyoming where they were able to lay 7 miles of track. However, the Central Pacific company had a record day when they shattered the 7 miles of track when they laid 10 miles of track.
6. The names of the locomotives were The Jupiter and 119. Both were steam locomotives.
7. David Hughes of San Francisco was the man who donated the actually golden spike.
8. While many prominent men tried to drive in the final spike, they kept swinging and missing. They had to have an actual railroad worker come in and drive in the final spike.
9. The one word message sent on the telegraphy was D O N E

Students can learn about the golden spike and silver spikes from surrounding states, what happened to the original locomotives, Chinese immigrant workers, language of the rails, and the mother of the golden spike, Bernice Gibb Anderson.

Students will be learning about mining in Utah and how it contributed to the development of our great state. Vocabulary words will be introduced and defined throughout the lesson and include: mineral, ore, immigrant, import, uranium, heritage and ghost town

🌎Activity #8: My Heritage Discussion
Students will participate in a collaborative discussion related to their own personal heritage and how it contributes to learning about Utah history. They will respond to the following questions:
Ask about your heritage. Which states and countries did your parents, grandparents and great-grandparents come from?
Students will answer the prompts using complete sentences. They will also respond to two classmates' posts.
