This module includes an in depth look at Utah's economy and how it has changed over time.  

🌎Activity #1: Utah Industry and Inventions Nearpod Lesson

Students will begin this module by discovering the long and arduous journey Utah took to become a state.  Vocabulary terms that will be taught in this lesson include:  poverty, industry, invention

🌎Activity #2: What Was the Cause of World War I? Newsela and Video Lesson

This activity is designed to teach students about the causes of World War I and the impacts it had on Utah and the citizens that lived in the state during this time..  Students will read the Newsela article titled "Outbreak of World War I."  The lexile level for fourth grade is 790L. Then they will answer a series of questions to demonstrate their comprehension of the article.

NOTE:  If you have not yet synced your class with Newsela you will need to do this first so your students have access to the article and activities you choose to assign in the program.  The activities listed in the module can be modified to accommodate activities assigned within Newsela. The questions can also be copied and pasted into a word document if that is the teacher preference.

This activity is designed to teach students about what caused and contributed to the Great Depression.  Students will read the Newsela article titled "The Many Causes of the Great Depression."  The lexile level for fourth grade is 730L. Then they will answer a series of questions to demonstrate their comprehension of the article.

NOTE:  If you have not yet synced your class with Newsela you will need to do this first so your students have access to the article and activities you choose to assign in the program.  The activities listed in the module can be modified to accommodate activities assigned within Newsela. The questions can also be copied and pasted into a word document if that is the teacher preference.

Students will begin this module by discovering what happen to Utah after World War I came to an end.  They will learn about the Great Depression and it impacted Utah's citizens and the economy.  Vocabulary terms that will be taught in this lesson include:  suffrage, depression, economy, charities

🌎Activity #5: World War II and Its Impact on Utah Nearpod Lesson

In this Nearpod lesson students will learn about how the United States became involved in World War II.  They will learn about the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Adolf Hitler's reign in Europe, Japanese Internment Camps, and the U.S. decision to bomb Japan.  Vocabulary terms that will be taught in this lesson include:  rations, codes, internment, Holocaust

In this activity, students will watch a video to learn what an economy is and why it is an important of communities. They will also be defining the following vocabulary terms:  goods, services, scarcity, resources, surplus, producers, consumers, supply and demand, and opportunity costs

This activity is designed to teach students about free enterprise/free market system so that they can understand how the economy works in our country and state.  Students will read the Newsela article titled "What is a Free Enterprise System?"  The lexile level for fourth grade is 730L. Then they will answer a series of questions to demonstrate their comprehension of the article.

NOTE:  If you have not yet synced your class with Newsela you will need to do this first so your students have access to the article and activities you choose to assign in the program.  The activities listed in the module can be modified to accommodate activities assigned within Newsela. In this lesson students will learn what the term "supply and demand" means.  Students will read the Newsela article titled "The Definition and Importance of the Supply and Demand Model."  The lexile level for third grade is 600L and the lexile level for fifth grade is 860L. Then they will answer a series of questions to demonstrate their comprehension of the article.

NOTE:  If you have not yet synced your class with Newsela you will need to do this first so your students have access to the article and activities you choose to assign in the program.  The activities listed in the module can be modified to accommodate activities assigned within Newsela. The questions can also be copied and pasted into a word document if that is the teacher preference.

🌎Activity #10:  Factors of Production

Students will be watching a video and reviewing a chart to learn about the four factors of production that fuel our economy.  The chart is found on the Canvas page and the video link is below:

Students will visit the following website http://ilovehistory.utah.gov/topics/government/index.html Links to an external site. to learn about the different types of government that have been a part of Utah's history.  After reading and exploring on the website students will respond to the questions given on the Canvas assignment.  

🌎Activity #11:  Factors of Production and Sugar Beets

Students will be reading a scenario regarding sugar beets, one of Utah's greatest produce items.  They will be dissecting the scenario trying to determine the four factors of production in the scenario.

🌎Activity #12:  Where is Utah in the 21st Century?

Students will be visiting the following website http://ilovehistory.utah.gov/time/tour10.html Links to an external site. to discover how the state of Utah, it's economy and citizens have worked together to make this state a great place to live.
