4.4.2 Storyline Overview
Earth's Rotation
This storyline consists of 4 episodes. Each episode ranges from 60-120 minute sessions. The students will be discovering that the Sun is a star that appears larger and brighter than other stars because it is closer to Earth. The rotation of Earth on its axis and orbit of Earth around the Sun cause observable patterns. These include day and night; daily changes in the length and direction of shadows; and different positions of the Sun and stars at different times of the day, month, and year.
Episode Overview:
Episode 1: Students will develop a model to explain the cause of day and night.

Episode 2: Students will gather and analyze data to develop a model and explain the cause of the pattern of movement in the night sky.

Episode 3: Students will gather and analyze data to develop a model and explain the cause of the seasonal patterns in constellations.

Episode 4: Students will gather and analyze data to construct an explanation about what causes patterns in shadows that can be used to tell time.
