English is a college preparatory English class that will prepare students for upper level English and college and career readiness. In this course students will be expected to actively engage in a curriculum that is aligned with the Davis School district DESK Standards. Students will read great works of literature, learn the fundamentals of research-based writing, and improve their vocabulary, grammar, writing, and literary analysis skills
There are two rules in this class that all procedures and interactions fall under:
1.Be Kind:be respectful of yourself, your classmates, and your teacher and other Layton High faculty, materials used in class, school property
2.Work hard: Do your very best, be accountable for your learning, and take responsibility your success and failures. Mistakes are ok and even encouraged, just make sure your take away something form them, and use that information to do better the next time.
Grading Scheme
Students’ final grades will be based on scores in the following areas:
70% = Summative Assessments (students will be graded on proficiency and mastery of the skill being tested)
25% = Formative Assignments (all practice activities and assignments done in order to prepare for the Final Summative Assessments) §
5% = participation (Silent reading, Journals, At the bell assignments, class discussions)
Scores will be calculated on a point system and will then be converted to a percentage and assigned a letter grade according to the following scale:
