Lesson Outline:

Arrange students in groups and give each group chart paper. You may need to explain how a sale of a skateboard works as you read through the problem with the class. Encourage the groups to use the problem-solving steps.

c. In what order do you need to think about the steps in this problem?

d. How can you find out the discounted price of the skateboard that Jen wants?

e. How will you determine how much money Jen has to spend?

Differentiation:

Challenge: For students who need a challenge, invite them to determine the highest possible marked price of a skateboard that Jen can afford.

Struggling: For students who need support, be sure to include them in groups with students who are strong mathematical communicators. Allowing students to listen to and contribute to a strong mathematical discussion within the small groups will benefit their understanding of the problem.
