Sixth Grade Homework Expectations

Davis School District Homework Guidelines state that "homework assignments for sixth graders are particularly important so that they begin to assume after school hours responsibilities that are critical for their success in junior high."  Homework is not meant to be frustrating.  It should be a review and/or practice of concepts that are currently being taught.  It is recommended by the District that 6th graders spend 50 - 60 minutes each night on homework (excluding standard independent reading time).

  • Weekly Reading Log -- Students are required to read 30 minutes every school night. Independent home reading should be recorded on the weekly reading log, totaled, & signed.  Reading logs are due each Monday (or Tues.)
  • Spelling Practice -- Each week, there will be a spelling unit with a pre & post test. No spelling unit on "short weeks".
  • ELA Assignments – Students will have occasional ELA assignments throughout each term that may extend into homework time. Instructions and due dates will be given in class.
  • Keyboarding Practice -- Students will be given weekly keyboarding assignments. Due dates will be determined.  WPM assessments will be given to encourage proficiency.
  • Term Book Report -- due once a term on a given due date -- specific instructions will be given at the beginning of each term.
  • Math Practice/Review -- Students will receive a nightly EDC practice review page due back the next school day. Calculators may be used on SOME of these assignments.  All work (thinking) must be shown and labeled.
  • Weekly Country “research/writing focus” report -- Students will receive a research assignment "almost" weekly. Each assignment should be completed as per instructions given in class, with quality effort & turned in on time.
  • Term Current Event Report -- Students will be assigned ONE world current event to report each term. Each student has their own due date.  Specific requirements are given in class.

NOTE:  ANY unfinished "daily classroom work" will need to be completed as homework and returned at the BEGINNING of class the next day.
