Expectations
Be humble
- Shine more light on others than yourself
- Take a moment where people praise you and turn it into a moment where you seek to praise others
Make eye contact
- When someone is speaking, keep eyes on him or her at all times.
- If someone makes a comment, turn and face that person
Congratulate and uplift a classmate
- Seek to uplift others.
- If someone in class wins a game or does something well, we congratulate that person.
- Claps should be of at least three seconds in length with the full part of both hands meeting in a manner that will give the appropriate clap volume.
Respect other students’ comments, opinions, and ideas
- We will never laugh or make fun of someone’s comments.
- Every person in class has something to contribute, we need to hear the opinions and ideas of everyone.
- It is okay to disagree, but there is a correct way to make your feelings known
If you win do not brag, if you lose do not show anger
- If you are good at something, others will recognize it. There is no need to tell others how talented you are.
- When you lose, say something like, “I really enjoyed the competition, and I look forward to playing you again,” or, “Good game,” or don’t say anything at all.
- In any competition, we will always try our best, and will never make an excuse for why we lost to someone.
Do not show disrespect with gestures
- Do not smack your lips, tsk, roll your eyes
Always say thank you when given something
- If you do not say it within 3 seconds after receiving the item, I will take it back. There is no excuse for not showing appreciation
- Do not insult the gift giver or make negative comments about the gift.
Surprise others by performing random acts of kindness
- Go out of your way to do something surprisingly kind and generous for someone at least once a month
When grading other students’ papers, give only the correct grade
- Occasionally we may grade each other’s papers as a group. When grading other students’ papers if you give someone an incorrect grade, whether it is higher or lower than they deserve, the amount will be deducted from your paper.
- The only marks you are allowed to make on others’ papers are an “X” and the number they got incorrect.
When we read together in class follow along
- If I call on you to read, you must know exactly where we are and begin reading immediately.
- If we read with energy and expression, there is no reason not to pay attention as we are reading.
Answer all written questions with a complete sentence.
- Restate the question and give your answer
- Give a reason why feel that way
- Support your answer
- Restate the question and close.
Do not ask for a reward
- At times throughout the year, I will give rewards for good behavior, academic performance, and other acts worthy of praise. If you ever ask me for a reward, however, it will not be given.
- You should be good and try your best because you are trying to better yourself, not because you are anticipating a reward.
You must complete your homework everyday
- Come prepared to class
Subject Transitions will be swift, quiet, and orderly
- We should be consistently able to turn from one book to another, complete with all homework and necessary materials, as quickly as possible.
- The opportune time should be less then 10 seconds and we will work toward a goal of seven seconds
Be as organized as possible
- No loose papers in your binder
- Cubby must stay clean.
When you are with a substitute teacher, you will obey the same rules that you follow when I am with you.
We will follow certain classroom protocols. We will be organized, efficient, and on task.
Keep yourself and the bathrooms clean and germ free
- Flush the toilet and wash your hands after using the bathroom
- Wash hands for at least 20 seconds.
Do not save seats in the lunchroom
- If someone wants to sit down, let them.
- Do not try to exclude anyone.
- We are a family, and we must treat one another with respect and kindness.
Do not stare at a student that is being reprimanded
- You wouldn’t want others looking at you if you were in trouble, so don’t look at others in that situation.
- If you are the student I am talking to, do not get angry or fuss at students who are looking at you. Let me know and I will handle the situation.
After dining in the cafeteria or elsewhere, be responsible for your trash
Be a good listener
When walking in line, keep your arms at your sides and move quietly
- Walk single file, with space between the person in front of you and behind you, with your arms at your sides
- Face forward at all times
- There is absolutely no talking.
Take schoolwide drills and precautions seriously
If anyone is bullying you, let me know, and do not bully others
- I am your teacher and I am here to look after you and protect you. I will not let anyone in this school bully you or make you feel uncomfortable.
- In return, I ask that you do not take matters into your own hands; let me deal with the student. Do not bully others.
Be positive and enjoy life
- Some things just aren’t worth getting upset over.
- Keep everything in perspective and focus on the good in your life.
Accept that you are going to make mistakes. Learn from them and move on.
No matter the circumstances, always be honest.
- Even is you have done something wrong, it is best to admit it to me, because I will respect that, and oftentimes I will forgo disciplinary measures because of your honesty.
Be the best person you can be
