2021-2022 Dance Company Disclosure Director: Jennifer Pitt (jpitt@dsdmail.net)
PURPOSE
To provide members of Centerville Jr. High an opportunity to be involved in and represent the school while building skills in dance--technique, composition, performance, production, and leadership.
MEMBERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintain Eligibility: Dancers must maintain a 2.0 GPA during their time on Dance Company. Dancers may have a total of one F and/or U on their report card for the entire school year.
- If GPA or citizenship requirements are not met, dancers will be placed on a term probation and may not participate or represent CJH at extracurricular activities as a dancer during that time. They, however, will continue to fully participate in all class time activities and extra practices. One probationary period is allowed in each school year.
- Once on probation, the dancer has one (1) term to meet the academic and/or citizenship requirements. If he/she fails to do so, he/she will be removed from the company and will not be allowed to represent CJH as a dancer in any activities for the remainder of the school year.
- Two probations, gross misconduct, an administrative U or any extreme violation of school rules or unacceptable conduct, on or off school property (as determined by the administration) will result in the dancer being put on probation or immediate removal from the company, determined by the administration, coaches and/or Standards Committee.
- Mid-term progress reports DO NOT apply to eligibility but will assist in preventing any potential problems.
Financial Commitment: There will be two sections for fees.
First--general fees for the 2021-2022 school year payable through your myDSD account: total of 360$. 1st Payment of 200$ due June 30th, 2nd payment of 160$ due July 30th.

Second—items you will be expected to purchase on your own:
- Hip-hop Sneakers (est. 60-70$): There will be a specific shoe that you will be buying. I will send out more information when this is decided.
- Half-Soles/turners/foot undeez etc . . . (est. $20.00): Most dancers have a preferred style or brand they prefer. All I ask is that they are nude/skin colored.
- Black Leggings: Leggings must be free of large logos and must be 7/8 length or longer.
- Black Dance Shorts: to be worn under costumes for performances
- Black Dance Tank: to be worn under costumes for performances.
RULES AND REGULATIONS
Section 1--Absences:
Any member who is unable to attend a dance company class period, rehearsal, function, or performance must have contact with the director in advance. Director may excuse the dance company member for the following reasons:
- Illness
- Death in the family
- Wedding of immediate family member
- Any life-event that requires the dancer’s attendance.
**Prearranged vacations must be disclosed at the Post-Parent Meeting and discussed with the director to determine any necessary actions that may need to be taken.
**If a member is absent within the week of a performance, member may be dropped from the routine whether the absence is excused or not excused.
Section 1 – Absences:
2 unexcused absences per term = probation
Section 2 – Tardies & Demerits
TARDIES
6 tardies = probation
DEMERITS
4 Demerits = 1 tardy
- All members must be willing to practice at designated times including extra practices
- Members not present within 30 minutes of the designated start time for practices or performances can receive multiple tardies, demerits, or unexcused absence.
- Members who are late for class or a performance will be given one tardy
Members will receive demerits for the following:
- forgetting a prop or costume piece, or if they are wearing the wrong attire to practice or a performance.
- Creating unnecessary drama within the dance company.
- Disrespect towards peer teachers or director.
- Poor attitude, lack of work ethic, unpreparedness
**Tardies or demerits can be made up by the end of each time period to be erased. It is the dance company member’s responsibility to coordinate with the director on how these demerits can be made up. With director’s approval, members are allowed to make up 1 tardy or 6 demerits in each of the following time periods. If not made up, tardies and demerits will carry over and affect the members citizenship grade.
- Period One: June – First day of school
- Period Two: 1st and 2nd term
- Period Three: 3rd and 4th term
Section 3 – Rules of Conduct
**Any violation of one or more of the following is cause for immediate probation or dismissal**
All standards and policies of both CJH and DSD must be upheld.
- Absolutely no drinking, smoking, vaping, attending parties where alcohol or drugs are used, intentionally missing class, dishonesty, disregard of any regulations in the disclosure or immoral or unlawful conduct is allowed.
- Bullying & Hazing of any kind will not be tolerated.
- Members will adhere to the dress code. Any member called in or sent home by an administrator for inappropriate dress or behavior, including swearing, public display of affectation, truancy, etc. will be penalized.
- Any inappropriate use of social media in a negative or sexual manner is prohibited and will be penalized.
- Any member sending inappropriate pictures of themselves, or others will be penalized or dismissed.
Section 4 – Travel
Parents are responsible for transportation.
Communication: All group communication will be done through the BAND app. This app can be accessed through computer, or smart device. Any individual communication needs to be directed through email. My email address is jpitt@dsdmail.net I will get to your emails as quick as I can during school hours. If you email me after 4:00 pm on a weekday or on the weekend, I will get to it as soon as I can during school hours the next day. If it is an urgent situation, please write the word urgent in the subject line of the email or mark the email as urgent.
CLASS, REHEARSALS and PERFORMANCES
Section 1 – Class & Rehearsals
- Class is held 5th Period (B Days): Class time will be used to clean choreography, work on technique and develop dance composition skills.
- We will hold regular before school rehearsals as needed. These will start either at 7:00 AM or 7:30 AM. Rehearsals will be used for choreography and technique.
- Dress rehearsals: Members should be on time and dressed in proper attire. Studio involvement is not an excuse for missing dress rehearsals.
- All rehearsals are closed to family and friends.
Section 2 – Performances
- Dancers must attend all rehearsals for a full week prior to any performance.
- Members are required to attend all performances, halftimes, assemblies, performance opportunities within the community, and year end concert
- Members must attend all classes on the day of a half-time or assembly and concert
- Members not dressed in appropriate attire, accessories missing, hair issues, etc. will receive demerit(s)
- Performance Opportunities through the school year:
- VHS Dance Company Concert—Fall (October). We will be a guest performance at this concert and perform one number.
- 2-3 Halftime Performances—during Boy’s and Girls’ Basketball Season
- Spring Dance Concert—To be held sometime during the month of April. Finalized time will be given at the beginning of Fall Semester.
IMPORTANT DATES:
- Summer Dance Intensive: August 3-5th—Dancers will be learning choreography for 1-2 of our company pieces, possibly taking master classes in different dance styles and participating in “team bonding” activities to build unity within the company.
- Summer Rehearsal/Conditioning: August 10th, 12th, 17th, 19th. We will be using this time to continue to clean and practice choreography as well as working on some dance conditioning. Time TBD, but most likely to be held in the AM for 1.5 – 2 hours in length.
LEADERSHIP: Any 9th grader on the company who would like to participate in the following leadership opportunities may apply by submitting the attached application. All offices will be selected by company director.
- President: Lead out in creating unity within the company. Work with other presidency members to come up with the 2021-2022 Dance Company Motto, plan choreography, and help lead out in warm-ups and team building activities. They will also assist the other presidency members in designing company clothing.
- Vice President (Fashion): Main responsibility will be to help design company clothing, decide hair and make-up and costume for whole team performances. Assist President in planning choreography, leading warm-ups and team building activities.
- Vice President (Spirit): Main responsibility will be to build team unity, recognize birthdays, take pictures, and document performances, activities and notable events. Will also assist in planning choreography, warm-ups, clothing design.
- Secretary: Take roll at all rehearsals, classes, and performances. Take meeting notes at Presidency meetings. In charge of publicity for the team and works with Vice President over Spirit in taking pictures and documenting performances, activities, and events.
