Classroom Behavior - "I CAN" Policy

Classroom Management: “Be Safe, Be Kind, Be Reliable”

In addition to home, school is another place for your child to practice making appropriate decisions and choices. This involves learning to use time, space, and resources effectively for individual and group purposes in...

...choosing what to do ...where and how to go about it
...when to do it ...and understanding why it's being done

Target.pngThere are five basic “I CAN...” behaviors in this classroom.

...be an active listener

...follow directions

...use polite control at all times

...come to school on time, prepared and ready to learn

...show respect for others, my classroom, and school property

(These behaviors support the school expectations of being safe, kind and reliable!)

It is important for all students to learn procedures, rules, and establish working boundaries of acceptable behavior. By adhering to these expectations, academic performance in the classroom will be more meaningful, productive, and successful.

The classroom will be a positive place where support and respect can be felt by all who enter.

Positive recognition, in multiple ways throughout the year, will reinforce the appropriate behavior expected of each class member. There will be plenty of reminders and helps along the way to allow for good habits to form.

Extracurricular activities will be periodically added into the schedule giving recognition to all students that demonstrate “self-control” & exhibit the “I CAN” behaviors, as well as academic responsibilities.

When a student needs more than a few verbal reminders or cues to follow the “I CAN” behaviors, consequences are as follows….

  • first consequence: student receives a GREEN REMINDER NOTICE to fill out, in the classroom away from the group, reminding themselves what they should be doing and turns it in.
  • second consequence (same day): student receives a YELLOW RETHINK NOTICE, will be redirected to another classroom for “think time” away from the 6th grade setting, during which they complete the THINK TIME form describing a recommitment to the “I CAN” expectations, returns to the classroom and turns it in.
  • third consequence (still same day): student receives a RED REVISIT NOTICE which initiates a visit with the principal – this could involve a phone call to home, a formal conference with student & parent, in-house or home suspension. A commitment plan is drafted; the notice is signed by student & principal and returned to the classroom by the student.
