Helping Your Child Succeed
Every day is filled with important learning opportunities in 5th grade.
Consistent attendance is so important. If students are sick with a fever, throwing up or coughing, then please keep them home, but please plan vacations and optional days off during school breaks. Concepts in math, science and language arts build upon each other, and when students are absent it is difficult for them to catch up.
Has Your Child Missed Class?
Students that miss class due to illness or vacation can expect to complete the work that they missed at home on their own time. I will provide copies of their missed work for them to take home and complete. The pages in math have a QR code on the school home connection side that link to a short video lesson of the concept being practiced. This work will be due within 5 days of them returning to school
About Acadience Testing
Students are tested on reading fluency, accuracy, retell and comprehension 3 times during the year using Amplify's Acadience test. Students that test below grade level expectations will receive extra help from the reading tutors, classroom teachers and classroom teaching assistants. The reading fluency words per minute goals are as follows: Beginning of the year 111, Middle of the year 120 and End of the year 130. Accuracy goals are 98% 98% and 99% respectively. Students are asked to read a passage and fill in the blank with the correct word (multiple choice) at the rate of 18 words correct, 20 words correct and 24 words correct in a 3 minute timing.
You can help your child succeed on the Acadience test by having them read aloud to you daily for a short period of time during their 30 minutes of reading homework.
About the Reading Inventory
Students will take the Reading Inventory at the beginning of the year and at the end of each term. This is a measure of reading comprehension which gives information about students' vocabulary knowledge, inference skills, and understanding of context clues. So much of what we understand about a text is not written outright but understood because of those 3 concepts. The reading inventory will hopefully show student growth in these areas as we practice daily to read complex text and understand what we are reading.
