Success Criteria: I can read with varied volume, expression, phrasing, smoothness, pace and accuracy-working towards earning a 4 in all areas on the fluency rubric.

Directions:
- Go back to the Anthology poems Fog, and White Cat Winter. Read them both aloud. As you do so, think about the fluency skill we are working on. Practice that skill as you read the poems.
- Keep in mind the rubrics below for the fluency skills we've been practicing this year.
Expression Rubric
- Reads in a quiet voice as if to get words out. The reading does not sound natural like talking to a friend.
- Reads in a quiet voice. The reading sounds natural in part of the text, but the reader does not always sound like they are talking to a friend.
- Reads with volume and expression. However, sometimes the reader slips into expressionless reading and does not sound like they are talking to a friend.
- Reads with varied volume and expression. The reader sounds like they are talking to a friend with their voice matching the interpretation of the passage.
Phrasing Rubric
- Reads in a monotone with little sense of boundaries; frequently reads word-by-word.
- Frequently reads in two- and three- word phrases, giving the impression of choppy reading; improper stress and intonation fail to mark ends of sentences and clauses.
- Reads with a mixture of run-ons, mid-sentence pauses for breath, and some choppiness, reasonable stress and intonation.
- Generally reads with good phrasing, mostly in clause and sentence units, with adequate attention to expression.
Smoothness Rubric
- Makes frequent extended pauses, hesitations, false starts, sound-outs, repetitions, and/or multiple attempts.
- Experiences several "rough spots" in text where extended pauses or hesitations are more frequent and disruptive.
- Occasionally breaks smooth rhythm because of difficulties with specific words and/or structures.
- Generally reads smoothly with some breaks, but resolves word and structure difficulties quickly, usually through self-correction.
Pace Rubric
- Reads slowly and laboriously.
- Reads moderately slowly.
- Reads with an uneven mixture of fast and slow pace.
- Consistently reads at conversational pace; appropriate rate throughout reading.
Accuracy Rubric
- Read with 6 or more errors
- Read with 4-5 errors
- Read with 2-3 errors
- Read with 0-1 errors
