Day 3 Instructions:
- Gather all of the organizers you filled out while reading Jacob Riis Champion of the Poor and The Fight for Equality. You will use the information from your notes to help you answer the prompt.
- You will also need a Opinion Writing Graphic Organizer listed above. Choose your preferred file type.
- Now it's time to answer the prompt: In your opinion, who made a bigger difference in their community, Jacob Riis or Sylvia Mendez. Use examples from the texts to support your opinion.
- Review your notes. Write your opinion, you can't pick them both, just one of them! - Who made a bigger difference in their community, Jacob Riis or Sylvia Mendez? Write this in the top box of the new graphic organizer.
-
Using information from your reading notes, organize your ideas to answer and support your opinion in the rest of the new graphic organizer. This is where you share why you chose who you chose, what did they do that made you believe that they made the bigger difference. You won't be able to fit all of the information in, so be sure to pick just the information that you feel best supports your opinion. Find three reasons that the person you chose made the bigger difference. You will go into more detail when you work through the writing portion.
-
DRAFT: Once your ideas are organized, it's time to draft your response β we turn your words and phrases in the organizer into sentences and paragraphs. The fun part about an opinion piece, is you own it - it's yours. You do need to explain why you chose who you did. What was it that made you feel like they made the biggest difference? Be sure to use examples from the texts to help support what you are thinking.
Sit down with a blank piece of paper or a blank Word document and begin writing. You decide how best to present your ideas through writing. One idea can be explained in two sentences, just like two ideas can be explained in one sentence. You are the master of your writing. Write however it best makes sense to you.
While writing, also keep the reader in mind. How will this sound to someone reading your writing? Are you communicating clearly?
