Goals for Extended Day Kindergarten Students
In Extended Day Kindergarten we want to help students improve their foundational reading skills in order to be successful in kindergarten.
Our main goals are:
- Learning to identify and write all the letters of the alphabet
- Knowing the sound for each letter
- To be confident in reading sight words and blending CVC words
Utah Common Core Standards
Reading: Foundational Skills Standard 1-Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.
- Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
Reading: Foundational Skills Standard 3-Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of one-to-one lettersound correspondences by producing the primary sound or many of the most frequent sounds for each consonant.
- Associate the long and short sounds with the common spellings (graphemes) for the five major vowels.
- Read common high-frequency words by sight (e.g., the, of, to, you, she, my, is, are, do, does).
