Syllabus - Reading, Study Time, and Literature
Reading and Study Time:
Reading is one of the most important habits you will ever develop in your life. Because of that, you will read every day in my class, and each student is expected to read one book of their choosing each term.
The first 10-15 minutes of class will be reading/study time. What you read or work on during this time is up to you. I suggest working on your reading goals, but if you’d prefer to just thumb through a magazine, that’s okay with me. You just need to be reading or studying. You may not read on your phone, but I will allow e-readers (Kindles, etc.) on a case-by-case basis. There will be no talking during this time.
Literature:
All of the major works, which we will cover in this class, have been approved by the district and the state for 11th grade English students. Literature (American and multicultural) will be chosen from the following list:
-
- Appropriate poems, short stories, articles, and essays from a variety of authors
- Two major plays: Shakespeare's Macbeth and Arthur Miller’s The Crucible
- Two American novels: Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea
- The choice between various multi-cultural works: Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief; Malala Yousafzai’s I Am Malala; Victor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning; and other approved or appropriate works
- Film versions of these works may also be shown in class.
