Welcome to Hacking STEM!! In this class we explore the areas of science, technology, engineering and math. This is a hands-on class where we do experiments, create products to improve lives (or just to have fun), and learn about different careers in the STEM fields.

Grading:

All assignments will be graded on a point scale. 90% of the grade will be based on the assignments, and 10% will be on starters. Starters will only be available the day the are assigned. If a student is absent, they can access them while they are at home. There are no quizzes. If students are absent, I will have a way for them to make up the project.

Late Work: I will accept assignments up to 7 days after the due date. After that, I will no longer accept assignments. Students can redo work as many times as they want to improve their grade on it, but only if they make the first attempt before the seven days are up.

     Grading Scale:

     Starters will be worth 10%

All other projects will be worth 90%

PLEASE READ THE ASSIGNMENTS CAREFULLY SO YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO TO RECEIVE FULL POINTS!!!

Conduct in class:

I expect all students to be respectful of me, each other, themselves, and all items in the room. Part of the engineering process is to make mistakes and learn from them, so I expect us all to make mistakes. That is how we can learn to improve what we are doing in the class. Luckily having perfect products and perfect experiment results aren't needed to get a good grade on the projects.

Procedures:

Students need to be in their seats ready to work when the bell rings. Otherwise, they will be marked tardy. Three tardies will result in a N and four will result in a U in citizenship.

No throwing items or roughhousing during class as it is a safety issue. If this happens, the student will receive a U in citizenship.

No phones or earbuds or gaming while I am giving instructions for the activity for the day. Occasionally you might be allowed to play games or be on your phone, but that will be very rare and will depend on your behavior. Please don't speed through the projects so you can play games.

Please don't be wasteful of the items we use in class. There will be a small fee tied into this class, but I don't want to have to charge too much if we use up all of the items, such as the tape and batteries and motors. Luckily I am good at using lots of recyclable items that we can get for free.

Fees cover items such as batteries, food supplies for the food labs, etc. Fees will be $10 per student.

I am excited to teach this class.
