Traditional Pathway: Irony in "The Cask of Amontillado" (W.2; RL.3)

Using the R.A.C.E. Strategy, Links to an external site. identify and explain one example of irony in "The Cask of Amontillado." Be sure to fully explain HOW your example is ironic. You can choose from the following types:

• Situational irony: The opposite of what we would expect to happen
• Verbal irony: Saying the opposite of what you mean (sarcasm)
• Dramatic Irony: The reader or audience knows something a character does not

Please highlight your paragraph according to the below colors:

"R" (blue) - Reword the question in the form of a statement. Include the title and author. This should NOT be phrased as a question!

"A" - (green) Identify a clear example of irony.

***TIP: It usually works best to combine the "R" and "A" into one sentence! 

"C" (yellow) - Cite textual evidence from the story, including a direct quote.

"E" (purple) - Explain the quote further: This quote shows... This should be several sentences!

Concluding Statement (red) - Write a concluding sentence that ties your ideas together.
